My brother was the astronaut who shot this photo on the STS 58 mission; since he was photographing on behalf of NASA, his name is not directly linked to the photo. He was passionate about mountains, to include climbing. He was featured in National Geographic, noting that their map of Everest allowed him to specifically identify that he had captured the view of K2. It is a nice piece of art in its own right, but the backstory is meaningful to our family and we are glad we could acquire this art. We have bought both an acrylic version and a metal version; both are great mediums for this specific photo.

Photo’s great however for the second time delivery was not. You may want to look at that issue because it’s going to cause me to buy my artwork elsewhwere.

Loving the set of prints by Jennifer! Yellow finches are the state bird of Washington, though they are becoming rarer and rarer to spot!

Artist's Description
On the way to Great Sand Dunes National Park in Colorado, I found myself on this long, straight, empty road. I love these dead straight roads with nobody on them -- they really epitomise the rural USA.
As there was nobody around, I stopped the car in the middle of the road, and took a photo. I used my 70-300mm lens to compress the foreground with the distant mountains, and a narrow depth of field to blur the nearby lines on the road. A low viewpoint captured the mirage effect from the hot pavement, as well as the heat haze.
About Alexis Birkill

Born in the UK, I moved to Vancouver, BC in 2011. My career in photography has grown from a long-held passion for capturing the beauty of the world, aided on the technical side by my background as a software developer. I specialise in fine art photography of landscapes, seascapes and cityscapes in and around the Pacific Northwest, with work exhibited internationally. Many of my photographs feature the beautiful city of Vancouver, but as well as capturing its iconic cityscapes, I can often be found exploring the BC and Washington coastline for new photographic opportunities, as well as developing my portfolio of night sky photographs featuring the Milky Way and the Aurora Borealis.
