Description
Not as the world gives, is Christ's peace. He told us that Himself.
Actually, He told us, and His disciples, a lot of things that seem fairly straightforward, but are extremely difficult for us to accept and believe – not the least because most of us haven’t seen evidence of His words manifesting themselves in our lives, at least, not in the way they look to be meant.
For example, consider the repeated admonition to Ask, Seek, Knock, and we will receive, find, and be answered. If a human being told us something like this, we would take their words literally, but we understandably have difficulty knowing how Christ meant and means it, and so develop complicated philosophical interpretations of what this must mean, as opposed to its direct meaning. It’s similar to what we do with poetry: so intent are we to find the meaning beneath the meaning, that we don’t look at the words themselves and take them for face value.
But what is the harm in just trying to believe that the words are true, and see what happens? Granted, there are plenty of charlatan preachers out there sort of saying something along those lines, but their words of prosperity doctrine miss the mark as far as faith, but go a long way in lining their pockets, and continually confusing the issue.
So it is with Christ’s peace – it exists, it is real, and it is not something we need to manufacture within ourselves or pretend is happening if it is not. Better yet to say, “God, you said you would give me peace, and I feel anxious all the time. I don’t know how you will grant this peace to me, but I know you can, and you will. So if there is anything for me to do to make this happen, then please show me. And if you just want me to back off and wait, then give me the patience to do so.”
It doesn’t hurt to ask.
