My brother was the astronaut who shot this photo on the STS 58 mission; since he was photographing on behalf of NASA, his name is not directly linked to the photo. He was passionate about mountains, to include climbing. He was featured in National Geographic, noting that their map of Everest allowed him to specifically identify that he had captured the view of K2. It is a nice piece of art in its own right, but the backstory is meaningful to our family and we are glad we could acquire this art. We have bought both an acrylic version and a metal version; both are great mediums for this specific photo.

Photo’s great however for the second time delivery was not. You may want to look at that issue because it’s going to cause me to buy my artwork elsewhwere.

Loving the set of prints by Jennifer! Yellow finches are the state bird of Washington, though they are becoming rarer and rarer to spot!

Artist's Description

The digits of e, the base of the natural logarithm, as a path traced by links between successive digits. Each digit is assigned a segment around the circle and a link between segment i and j corresponds to the appearance of ij in e. For example, the "71" in "2.71..." is drawn as a link between segment 7 and segment 1. The number of transitions between digits is summarized in a series of concentric circles placed outside the links.

About Martin Krzywinski

Martin Krzywinski

As a scientist, it is my responsibility not only to present work clearly, but to connect broadly by sparking imagination and enthusiasm for inquiry and understanding. To do this, science communication must engage both cognitively and emotionally. I try to make people think and feel good by creating visualization tools and information graphics that combine analytical clarity with an artistic dimension. During my work on cancer genomes, I created Circos, now a community standard for displaying information in this field. More recently, I introduced a method for rationally visualizing networks using hive plots. My information graphics have appeared in the New York Times, Wired, Scientific American and on covers of books and...
